Dragonfly, which is called tshân-enn in Taiwanese, means the dragon flying to the sky. It is called nymph in its juvenile stage. It lives in the water. If the water quality is poor, we will not be able to see it. Therefore, it is one of the indicators used to observe the water quality in the environment. The nymph of the dragonfly is called shui-chai. They eat wigglers or other small aquatic biota while it is also the food of large fish and the bird like Greater Painted-snipe at the same time. After growing into an adult, it will fly around its habitat to protect it and catch insects like mosquitoes and flies. Compared to the disappearance of bees for pollination, the reduction of dragonfly quietly has rarely been mentioned. Without the environment of dragonfly flying around, the ecological chain is out of balance and there will be more and more mosquitoes and insects. There are more than 150 types of dragonflies in Taiwan, and the smallest one is only with a length of body of 1.7 cm. That is little red dragonfly, and the habitat for the little red dragonfly is limited. It can be found at Caopi Village, Yuanshan Township, Yilan County, but the quantity is very few.
